On November 17th, 2024, folks descended upon my house – which was covered in plastic and paper because we’re painting (of course we are) – to celebrate the launch of Guardian.

From the tasty cake made by my mother-in-law (the featured image – it had this cool paper-thing on top that burned away to reveal the cover art!) to reading a chapter from the book (Chapter 18: The Sound of Terror), to taking orders for the first books, it was a wonderful, incredible, and humbling experience.

Especially considering the books weren’t even here yet!

Yup. Despite express printing and very expensive shipping, the first 30 copies of Guardian arrived from Ingram-Spark over a full week later than they were meant to. For any aspiring writers out there, a word of advice:

Not having the book at your launch party will absolutely ruin your life right up until the party. Then this really cool thing happens: People congratulate you anyway.

Because of course the books are late to a party held in a papered-over house. They didn’t show up for a book. They showed up for the author of said book! There are many stories I love, but few are as amazing as the ones that intersect with my own life.

Guardian‘s first 30 copies are here, signed, and ready to go to their very first supporters and readers.

(Those are Chonkmarus sitting on top of them! I bought them to support a great app for self-care called Amaru. Check it out! The main character is ridiculously adorable.)

And, for posterity, below is Guardian from start to finish…

The original 30 will be shipped/delivered personally (I hope) by Thanksgiving, unless we discussed otherwise.

It has been a profound pleasure to be surrounded by proven friends and I am so excited to hear what all of you have to say about my first book! (Even if you don’t like it.) Work on Apex is already underway – more on that in next week’s issue of THE DIRT – and Rachael and I have pinky-promised to never launch a book in the middle of a (necessary) house project ever again!

You are all lovely people and, as I said at the party, your stories are among my most favorite.
